This references Concrete Genie, a 2019 PS4 game developed by Pixelopus. The main character Ash uses a paint brush that can bring his creations to life. Aside from being a technical showcase, Astro’s Playroom is also a game that was clearly made with a lot of care and passion. Each world is themed after a particular computer component, and one of the main goals is to collect secret items that are all pieces of classic PlayStation hardware.

Pools Brings Liminal Terror To Ps5 And Ps Vr2 On Nov 25

Each area showcases innovative gameplay that taps into the new features of the PS5’s DualSense wireless controller. Astro’s Playroom was a launch title for the PlayStation 5 that comes pre-installed on the console. The game is a fantastic tech demo for the DualSense controller while also being an enjoyable platformer in its own right. Astro’s Playroom has been described as a love letter to PlayStation, as the game is full of references to past and present Sony franchises. [newline]As you’re exploring Playroom’s levels you’ll also stumble across Astro Bots wearing a blue cap and holding a camera. They’re mostly there for the fun of it all rather than to accumulate anything, but every single one of them made me smile, even the few that I had to take a moment to try and guess at. I won’t spoil any more here so as to not rob anyone of the joy of first discovering them.

The EyeToy camera was a webcam that allowed the player to participate in mixed-reality minigames, where their body is able to interact with the games on-screen. This makes it a precursor of sorts to Xbox’s Kinect seven years later. The use among games would vary, but it’s most influential game was Toro’s first game, Doko Demo Issyo in 1999, turning him into a PS1 mascot in Japan. Since Memory Cards were sold separately, many PlayStation 1 games (like Crash Bandicoot) offered a password system that allowed you to return to where you left off with all your progress. Sony would later release a USB adapter to connect PS1 and PS2 Memory Cards to a PlayStation 3, even PS3s that couldn’t play those games.

While linear, the space feels open enough to have a ton of details throughout. The basics are you’re traversing the area, trying to find items and coins as you reach the next level. Some of the levels have power-ups that are creative in form and function. For example, you’ll get a frog suit controlled through motion controls and the R2 adaptive trigger. There are other hidden special collectibles in the levels too that I won’t spoil but they play into the other part of this game and that is how it is a love letter to PlayStation fans everywhere. Every level is full of references and Easter eggs to hardware and games that have released over the course of PlayStation’s 25-year history.

As you can tell, there’s not much of a story with this game, but you don’t need a fully fleshed-out plot for this demo. Astro’s Playroom has you controlling one of the Astro Bots as you explore different areas to find artifacts. These aren’t just any items but other accessories and items from PlayStation’s history. Collecting all the items feels like you’re a curator at a PlayStation museum. Suits like these are creative enough not to make the motion control feel like too much of a gimmick and eventually make you hate it.

And it might just be the ideal game to sell you on a PlayStation 5. This is a game many people might look past in their excitement to play one of the AAA launch titles for the PlayStation 5, but that would be a mistake. Astro’s Playroom is utterly charming, surprisingly deep and shows, more than many other titles, some of what makes the PS5 unique.

Artifact 1/2 “Playstation Camera” – From the location of puzzle piece 2, you need to jump up to a set of handholds on the left side. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – When you reach the area with the monkey bars, you can reach this puzzle piece to the left side of the second one. Artifact 2/2 “Playstation Vita Game Pack” – After avoiding the large yellow barrel, go up the slope then directly left.

In 2016, Siren was ported to the PlayStation 4 with added Trophy support. During the side-path to the PSone LCD Monitor, you’ll find a Bot in samurai attire next to a tree. This refers to Jin Sakai and the tree in his childhood home, as seen in 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima on PS4, developed by Sucker Punch. Ghost of Tsushima was the last first-party PlayStation game developed exclusively for the PS4, after which the PS5 released. Very early into the Electrocloud level, you’ll spot a jet fighter flying about on the right-hand side of the level.

These trophies introduce you to Astro Playroom’s creative levels and DualSense features‚ making them a delightful way to begin your trophy hunt. Other stages are linear platforming challenges that use Astro’s laser-powered hover-jump. These portions are also pretty forgiving, with generous checkpoints and obstacles that provide just enough resistance to make you pause a moment, but not so much that you get stuck. Plus, it’s hard to get too mad with the game’s infectiously upbeat soundtrack going in the background. So often that’s where magic in video games happens, and that’s most certainly the case here. On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer.

After going through a small round room with Shock Orbs in it, you’ll go up a tall shaft with fans trying to push you into Shock Walls. When you get to the very top, look in the background to spot two bots playing “Bot Fighter”. This is a reference to Street Fighter, Capcom’s famous fighting game franchise that debuted in 1987.

Artifact 1/2 “PS2 Game Disc” – After climbing up and reaching the next checkpoint, there is a spot you can blow into the mic which launches a satellite platform. Climb across to the next area and a large rock will crash into the platform. Puzzle Piece 3/4 – In the section after the falling circular wall pieces, you need to use the bar to jump up and over the wall to the right to reach this puzzle piece. Artifact 1/3 “PSVR Headset”– While jumping to the above puzzle piece, then is a swinging handhold you can grab after.

Artifact 1/2 “PS Move Sharpshooter”– After jumping up through the two slanted glass panels, jump to the left to an area with a wooden box with a diamond on it. There is a built-in progress tracker on PS5 trophies so you can easily keep track how many you found already. Astro’s Playroom is a free game, pre-installed to every PlayStation 5 console. 789win awestruck by the game, it didn’t take very long to see why Sony’s catchy ‘For the Players’ tagline is an admirable slogan built on a history of gaming icons. This game is incredibly well-made; the care put into it is visible in every corner; but as it is it was not made for people like me.
