While no weapon works the same in all scenarios, numerous weapons rise above their peers in terms of utility. As you war through Bluepoint Games’ remake of Demon’s Souls, you should take care not to miss these outstanding weapons. Every texture in Demon’s Souls has been painstakingly repainted, sometimes to the point of questionable reinterpretation. Every stilted animation appears to have been replaced by three or four new ones, all of them remixed with more lifelike flourishes. Many of the original game’s points of aggravation, like long load times and frequent backtracking, have been softened or nearly eliminated.

I’ve spent well over 30 hours with this game and I’m sure I’ll be spending four times that on subsequent playthroughs in the months to come. It’s almost everything a fan or newcomer could hope for, with just a handful of things played too safe keeping it from sheer perfection. When it was first revealed, the long-rumored Demon’s Souls remake was met with great enthusiasm, including from me. The original game’s servers are down and it remains trapped on the PS3. This is a special title, something of a cult classic that helped spawn the entire “Souls” franchise (and genre) and elevated FromSoftware’s name with spiritual successors in Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

While it is a handicap since you will have less health, it is the only way that allows you dying in the game without messing up the World Tendency. Defeat 3 Bosses in each Archstone for the world to turn Pure White and take care of all the Trophy-relevant events like rescuing the merchants needed for Spells and Miracles. Looks aside, questions remain regarding the extent of this remake.

If FromSoftware and Sony were ever to reboot an old IP, Demon’s Souls isn’t even at the top of the list. Overall, while fans will always hold on to hope for an eventual Demon’s Souls 2, it’s unlikely to happen, though I’ll happily eat my words if it does. Unfortunately, things aren’t looking great for a dedicated sequel to Demon’s Souls, despite there being high demand and a massive built-in audience. The main problem is one that fans of FromSoftware (the company responsible for all things Souls) are more than familiar with, which ultimately comes down to who owns the rights to the Demon’s Souls IP.

An increase will push the world’s tendency to white while a decrease will push it to a blacker tendency. By talking to the Monumental at the near start of the game and saying yes to his question, reaching pure White Character Tendency will net you a Friend Ring from the Monumental. Reaching a pure Black or White state can make major changes to your location. Sometimes you might be at a disadvantage if you don’t have a useful item from another region, but there’s really no rule as to which stages must be tackled in which order throughout the bulk of the game. I intend to create a Guts build in this game, to compliment the work I did in Dark Souls Remastered. Demon’s Souls offers many language versions which can be freely changed in the settings – it applies both to the text language and the voiceover language. This will lead you in front of the big iron gate at the beginning of the level. In case you missed it earlier, head to the west section where you previously obtained the Cling Ring, and you will find two corpses by the unlocked iron gates to loot the following. If you never played any Souls games, expect a long learning curve, your first Souls game is always your hardest. For newcomers the Royalty starting class which focuses on magic is recommended. Demon’s Souls isn’t just a good game — it’s one of the best PS5 launch games available and one of the best launch titles ever. If you’re apprehensive about the difficulty, try to find a friend for some co-op because this isn’t an experience to miss out on. Bluepoint Games’ previous work was well done but this is truly stellar.

You can check the state of a world’s tendency by going to the World Tendency screen view the Archstone of each world. The whiter it is, the closer you are to achieving Pure White in that world. Each world can lean towards one of the two existing tendencies – White and Black. Depending on your level of black or white in each state, different events will be unlocked. There’s also the non-linearity of Demon’s Souls which, combined with the aforementioned brevity, makes it satisfying to revisit.

When you reach the execution grounds, you’ll encounter x3 Black Phantom Dreglings. Once you’ve killed all three, you’ll also find a Crystal Lizard nearby and a pile of corpses that you can loot to obtain x6 Unknown Warrior Soul. Shoot them with arrows to kill them — one Reaper will drop 4,000 souls when defeated. The ghosts them summon will also die, which is why they’re worth so many souls. To really start farming souls, you need to reach 4-2 by defeating the Adjudicator. As long as you have a bow, this boss is easy — just shoot arrows from the upper floor near the stairs / fog door at the glowing bird. By following these simple methods, you can earn 20,000 souls in a single quick run, or complete multiple runs earlier in the game for a quick 4,000 souls per enemy defeat.

Manipulating world and character tendency, finding all the NPC events, collecting all weapons and spells is a multi-cycle affair that gets more and more fun as you go on. It also leads to a game that isn’t as refined or smoothly-functioning as some of its contemporaries, making for an experience that can feel quite dated… That is, unless the player decides to try out the remake instead. The minor gameplay adjustments and the massive graphical overhaul is enough to make the game feel that much more modern and easy to get into. For those who haven’t played Demon’s Souls since 2009, or even those who haven’t played the remake since its 2020 launch, there’s plenty of value in delving back into Boletaria. After playing SC888 like Elden Ring, it’s fascinating to revisit modern FromSoftware’s roots, seeing the impetus for its one-of-a-kind design philosophy with the benefit of hindsight.

And despite requests from a portion of the audience for easier difficulty options (and a vocal contingent that would be upset by such a concession) there will be no difficulty setting in Demon’s Souls on PS5, Moore confirmed. Demon’s Souls will also have a vast number of visual improvements. The game’s kingdom of Boletaria is far more detailed than it was on PlayStation 3, and the game will feature two graphical settings.

The scene is practically unrecognisable, but remains gorgeous to look at. It’s curious to note, that Bluepoint’s Vanguard shot is unique in revealing a resolution of 2560×1440. It’s the only asset released so far under a native 4K – and so, perhaps, it’s a sign of a high frame-rate performance mode on PS5. Whether that ends up being 1440p60 or not this would be a fascinating and reasonable trade-off for a faster refresh.

Players can level up using collected souls via the Maiden in Black character in the Nexus. This is unlocked after defeating the first boss of Boletaria Palace. Players will find conquering the dark, hostile world of Demon’s Souls a challenge, but a highly rewarding one; with deep, satisfying combat, unforgettable enemies and an extraordinary landscape to explore. Experience the original brutal challenge, completely remade from the ground up. All presented in stunning visual quality with enhanced performance, this is the world of Boletaria as you have never seen it before.
